Home Remedies for Headache

In today’s stressful work environment, headache has become one of the most common ailments, even in the younger generation. Although a very basic problem, but headaches cause as much discomfort as any other complicated disease. Popping a painkiller or two, seems to be the easiest and most effective way of treating headache, but is it the safest way? Unmonitored administration of painkillers can lead to lot of other health complications in body, including addiction. Drug dependency of any kind is never good and the frequency with which people are nowadays taking these painkillers can prove to be very dangerous. Ayurveda has lot of home remedies for treating and controlling headaches, which are effective, easy and non harmful.

  • Take 30 leaves of TULSI (holy basil) with 12 black peppers, 1 garlic clove and grind them together by mixing some water. Drain and store the water from the mixture in a glass bottle. Smell this liquid on a regular bases 8-10 times a day to treat chronic headache.
  • If nostrils are closed in headache, take 15 leaves of TULSI (holy basil) with clove and ghee and burn them. Inhale the fumes of the mixture to treat headache.
  • If headache is due to heat, then rub small pieces of gourd on your forehead.
  • If there is stomach pain along with headache, then chew 1 teaspoon of SAUNF and drink a glass of warm milk over it. It will give relief in both stomach pain and headache.
  • For headache during winters, make paste of heeng (asafetida) and apply on forehead. Also in morning take heeng with warm water.
  • Take watermelon juice mixed with MISHRI (crystalline sugar or rock sugar) everyday in morning during summers to keep mind refreshed and avoid headache due to heat.
  • Make black tea of TEJPATTA (bay leaf) with lemon juice and drink it for relief in headache.
  • Grind garlic in water and apply the paste on forehead.
  • Acacia flower, coriander seed and pumpkin seed, take in equal quantity and grind them. Take one teaspoon of this paste twice a day for relief in headache.
  • Grind onion and apply the paste on foot sole.
  • Take 500 mg of KAPUR (camphor) and 2 grams of SAUNF (aniseed) grind them separately (without adding water), mix them and store in a glass bottle. Smell this mixture during headache for relief.
  • Mix DALCHINI (cinnamon) with water to make paste. Apply it twice daily on forehead and clean after its dried. After sometime of starting this process, headaches will slowly stop.
  • If headache is there because of cold, then mix TULASI leaves (holy basil), black pepper, SAUNTH (dry ginger), BADI ELAICHI (long cardamom), pinch of JAIPHAL (nutmeg) powder with 400 ml water. Boil the mixture till 100 ml remains. Drain out the liquid and drink to get relief in both headache and cold.
  • Put lemon leaves juice in water and take steam of this mixture for relief in cold and headache.
  • Mix 10 grams each of PEEPAL leaves, SAUNTH (dry ginger), MULETHI (liquorice), KUTH (marjoram) and make fine powder. Make paste of this powder by mixing water and apply on forehead to treat headaches.
