Insomnia can cause Headache !!!

Headache is a common symptom of insomnia. Most of the times patients suffering from insomnia or lack of sleep, feels severe headache and keeps on taking medicine for headache, when the real problem is lack of sleep. Patient suffering from insomnia is not able to sleep at night and he thinks it is because of headache, when actually it is the other way round and headache is due to insomnia. So its important to identify headache caused because of lack of sleep in order to treat the correct problem. During headache because of insomnia, it is difficult to locate one part of head with pain. Also the headache is felt in back of the head and moves towards neck and shoulders. 

Causes of Insomnia:

Insomnia is a disease and also symptom of many other diseases as well. Insomnia or lack of sleep can be caused due to mental stress, mental tension, depression, overload of work, excessive tea and coffee intake, lack of physical exercise, heart problems etc. For effective treatment of insomnia it is always good to identify the root cause of it.

Home treatment of insomnia:

  • Take light meal at night and atleast 3 hours before going to sleep.
  • Sometimes due to lack of physical activity, the body is not tired enough to fall asleep. This condition gradually leads to body adjusting its biological clock to less sleeping hours and this ultimately leads to insomnia. So try to include enough physical activity in daily routine to fall asleep at night.
  • Follow fixed and regular sleeping pattern. Due to work or other engagements people tend to not follow a regular sleeping pattern that disturbs the biological clock of body and leads to insomnia. Fix a time at night to go to sleep and fix morning waking up time. Although difficult to follow initially, but gradually body’s biological clock will get set and will automatically treat insomnia.
  • Getup early in morning and go for morning walk, for proper oxygen intake and refreshing brain to release stress and tension. A relaxed mind is essential for sound sleep.
  • Take a glass of warm milk with honey before going to sleep. Tryptophan present in milk is a sleep inducing amino acid. Taking warm milk before sleeping helps in relaxing the body and falling asleep.
  • Grind 6 grams of poppy seed (khas khas) in 250 ml of water and strain out the liquid. Mix 20 grams of crystalline sugar (mishri) to it and drink the liquid in morning on empty stomach.
  • Mix 3 grams of white seeds of musk melon with 3 grams poppy seed (khas-khas) and grind it. Take this powder in morning and evening for a week to treat insomnia.

Simple lifestyle changes along with home remedies can effectively treat insomnia. Headache due to lack of sleep will automatically be treated once you will start taking proper and sound sleep.
